Managing Innovation, Design and Creativity-by Bettina Von Stamm

Synopsis: John Locke consider that “innovation” as ” suspected and opposed new opinions”.(cited by Managing Innovation,Design and Creativity) Good design look at the same things in a brand new manner, and design is the challenge of the existing technology. Creativity has been systematilised. Some special people, who has creative traits and generate the ideas through a certain process; and the ideas should be verified.

Critique: In my opinion, it is an good article about innovation. The author clearly point out how innovation could happen. Obviously, innovation includes creativity and design. Innovation and operation are closely connected. Operation activity absorbs the ideas from innovation, innovation improves the technology and other things from operation feedback. In a word, the innovation can be seen as idea selection development process and the operation can be seen as idea commercialisation process, they should be implemented in a timely and effective manner. James Dyson (1999) suggested that:” It is the process that information has been transformed into tangible outcomes.” And design should be variously subjective, personal and emotional. Good design can be improved by gradual innovation redesign of existing products, related to user needs, new markets, or competitors.

Reflections: According to real life, there are related HR strategies to implement the innovation , design and creativity. Burnes (2000) recommends “HR strategy is the highest state of oranisational learning to transform itself continuously through the development and involvement of all his members.” In detail, formal and informal network can be used in managment of knowledge, because controlling innovation, design and creativity can be achieved through knowledge management. For example, the designers can be detected in personality traits in habits of thought and work, as well as in educational background. Aim to develop the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization, expert’s suggestion, commercialisation and monitoring are helpful. The organizational HR policy support should focus on knowledge management, organizational culture estibulishment, internal and external communication networks.
